Cruise Night Birthday!
July 3rd was my birthday. 70 years young. 😊 Last weekend, I had a large gathering of friends and family—lots of food, lots of people, and lots of fun. But yesterday, my wife asked me what I wanted to do for my actual birthday. I told her nothing. Friends who are aware of all the things going on know that rest and relaxation would be a good thing. But my birthday also fell on a Thursday this year. Cruise night birthday!
My grandson had told me he was going to join me for the day. He got here early in the day, and my wife, he, and I went out and grabbed a coffee together. Jacob and I were planning on heading over to the cruise night at Frogg Brewing. Around lunchtime, a terrible storm struck, and I wondered if the show would go on. But, a few hours later, the sun shone through, and we were on.
Cruise Night Is Happening
I love cruise nights, and I’m a car enthusiast. Jacob shares my love for all things cars. My wife indulges us!
We headed over around 3:30 with the show starting at 4. When we arrived, as I got out of my car, I heard, “Lee, come hither!” What? 😊 Jacob and I walked over, and one of my friends, who was there with his wife, gave me a gift bag. A very cool gift!
There was a great card. As well as two toys and a hot sauce with 1 million plus Scoville units! Toys? In the bag were two die-cast cars! A Johnny Lightning 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator and an Ertl 1969 Cougar Eliminator are still in the packaging. But wait! How did he know?
“The plot thickens!”
A little backdrop. My friend, Tina, used to work for me at one of my newspapers. Over the years, she has become a skilled photographer and is now a track photographer in Vermont. She came to my party last week. And then she was at the 4th Newport Wings & Wheels Car Show the next day. While she was there taking pictures, my friend was there with his wife.
Tina posted that she had taken pictures. My friend reached out to her to do a photo shoot of his car, and at some point, he saw that she and I were friends. He reached out to her to find out “what my favorite car” was. Tina reached out to my wife, Tina. My wife didn’t know. So, she reached out to my grandson, Jacob. He told her about my ‘70 Cougar Eliminator. And the process reversed itself.
My friend went to a friend of his who collects die-cast cars and picked these two up for me!

How very cool!
We sat on the patio while vehicles continued to pull in. Jacob got a chicken parm, my wife a BLT wrap, and I had a bacon burger with onion rings. My birthday meal!
Friends, cars, and food.
There were many great cars, trucks, and vans that attended the show last night. You can see pictures of them on our Facebook page, as well as follow us on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
Car guys are the best. (Though, a friend reminded me that car gals are great, too!) It was a cruise night birthday.
Lots of folks came over to say, “Happy Birthday,” and I received some cards as well. I could have had my birthday at many places, but these folks were the greatest. It was great fun to hang out with, and with some fantastic cars, it was terrific!
Jacob and I wandered around, talking to car owners, taking pictures, and enjoying the great weather. My friend, Tina, took pictures, and spoke to vehicle owners.
One of the very reasons I started Powerless Over Cars was so that I could go to car shows and cruise nights, and feel “justified.” But, really, I was powerless over cars!
Frogg Brewing is one of my favorite breweries to go to, and adding in cars… And a birthday! Well, that cruise night birthday is special, and we need more of them! (Maybe one of the things I need to do is do a cruise night birthday piece of merchandise. Something to buy for that guy or gal.)
I want to thank all the people who blessed me on my birthday. (Especially, Stephanie & Michael, Steve & Jessica, Ray, and most of all my family.) I got kidded by some of the guys who said they “can’t remember 80, let alone 70!” Thanks for being so kind. I told Jacob when I was driving him home that I think we need to do something for this great group of people. Both he and Tina had a great night.
If you haven’t been to a car show or a cruise night, perhaps it’s time.
